Ateliers de danse
Dans presque tous les festivals Cajun et Zydeco, l’atelier de danse fait partie intégrante des réjouissances, et ce pour une bonne raison : aucune fête C&Z n’est complète sans une bonne nourriture, des rencontres avec des amis et… de la danse.
La première à me tirer par le bras pour m’apprendre une valse cajun a été Satu Phillips à la “House of Blues” du festival Zydeco City à Raamsdonksveer. Pas tout à fait stable sur ses pieds après quelques bières, elle a piqué mon intérêt. Je devais juste l’apprendre aussi.
La prochaine édition de l’atelier de danse du festival a été dirigée par Gary Hayman, que vous pouvez entendre chaque semaine sur zydecajun radio. Une partie de la soirée, nous étions déjà sur le sol avec ces quelques pas que j’avais appris, après tout, c’est comme ça que la musique est entraînante.
Après Gary, toute une série de professeurs de danse sont arrivés comme Harold Guillory de Lake Charles Louisiana, Phill Underwood du Royaume-Uni. À ses cours, j’ai toujours dansé avec Satu, ce qui permet de progresser un peu plus vite si l’on est sur la piste avec un partenaire de danse expérimenté.
Lors de l’une des éditions du festival ZydeoZity, nous avons organisé une fête privée de l’établissement de santé local la veille du début du festival et Phil Underwoord est arrivé par avion un jour plus tôt pour l’atelier de danse. Une remarque de ma part sur scène, à savoir si des dames voulaient participer (+500) aux cours de danse et que j’étais également disponible, a été accueillie avec enthousiasme par des acclamations. Il y a des nuits pires.
Apprendre à danser, c’est surtout regarder les autres le faire, comme le vétéran “Jerry” de Breaux Bridge, en Louisiane, qui a participé à presque tous les festivals en Europe. Lors d’un événement C&Z privé, Jerry a également été invité mais il était indisposé et a demandé s’il pouvait envoyer une connaissance qui était justement aux Pays-Bas pour enseigner à l’université. Oui, c’était autorisé et la dame en question, Elisabeth, de Louisiane, qui avait l’habitude d’aller à un événement de danse chaque week-end, a demandé si un partenaire de danse était disponible. Je me suis retrouvé quelque part au fond de la salle à ce moment où des connaissances sont venues me présenter cette beauté en me demandant de la divertir sur la piste de danse. Et encore, ce sont les avantages (je pensais) d’avoir appris à danser. Au cours de la soirée, je lui ai demandé en passant : “Avec ces températures chaudes en Louisiane, vous ne dansez certainement pas si près”, ce à quoi elle m’a attiré plus près d’elle. “Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas avec ton rythme de danse ?” a-t-elle dit. “Je pense que j’ai un court-circuit quelque part”, lui ai-je répondu honnêtement.
En dehors du festival, un atelier de danse a été organisé au studio Swamp en hiver. Mary Elms a été invitée du Royaume-Uni et j’ai été autorisée à devenir partenaire. Encore une fois, nous avons beaucoup appris et nous nous sommes amusés.
L’avantage de la danse, c’est que dès que les dames savent que vous savez bien danser, elles viennent vous chercher, jeunes et moins jeunes, on ne s’ennuie jamais et votre cercle d’amis s’agrandit rapidement à chaque festival.
En 2017 au festival de Pontchartrain en France près de Paris, j’ai demandé à une dame si elle voulait danser. Elle m’a dit que je pouvais bien diriger sur la piste de danse. “Sympa de ta part de dire ça ehh, … “Kay, Kay Anderson”. C’est gentil de dire ça, Kay, parce que j’ai regardé vos vidéos d’instruction de danse sur Internet de nombreuses fois il y a plus de dix ans. Et puis, recevoir un compliment de l’un de mes modèles, c’est toujours agréable.
ENGLISH Dance Workshops
At almost every Cajun and Zydeco festival, the dance workshop is a regular part of the revelry and for good reason because no C&Z party is complete without good food, meeting friends and, … dancing.
The first to pull me by my arm to teach me a cajun waltz was Satu Phillips at the ‘House of Blues’ at the Zydeco City festival in Raamsdonksveer. Not quite steady on my feet from a few beers, she had piqued my interest. I just had to learn it too.
The next edition of the festival the dance workshop was provided by Gary Hayman, you can hear him weekly at zydecajun radio. Part of the evening we were already on the floor with those few steps I had learned, after all, that’s how catchy the music is.
After Gary, a whole series of dance teachers came along like Harold Guillory from Lake Charles Louisiana, Phill Underwood from the UK. At his classes I always danced with Satu (organiser Bristol Festival UK) which allows you to progress a little faster if you are on the floor with an experienced dance partner.
On one of the editions of the ZydeoZity festival, we had a private party of the local health care institution on the night before the start of the festival and Phil Underwood (UK) was flown in a day early for the dance workshop. An on-stage comment from me, whether any ladies wanted to participate (+500) in the dance classes and that I was also available, was enthusiastically greeted with cheers. There are worse nights.
Learning to dance is mostly watching others do it like veteran ‘Jerry’ from Breaux Bridge Louisiana, he was at almost every festival in Europe. At a private C&Z event Jerry was also invited but he was indisposed and asked if he could send an acquaintance who was just in Holland to teach at the University. Yes that was allowed and the lady in question ‘Elisabeth’ from Louisiana, she was used to going to a dance event every weekend asked if there was a dance partner available. I found somewhere in the back of the hall that moment when acquaintances came to introduce this beauty to me with the request to entertain her on the dance floor. Those are the advantages (I thought) of having learned to dance. During the evening I casually asked her; “With those hot temperatures in Louisiana, you certainly don’t dance so close,” to which she pulled me closer to her. “What’s wrong with your dancing rhythm?” she said. “I think I have a short circuit somewhere,” I answered her honestly.
Outside the festival, a dance workshop was organized in winter at the Swamp studio and Mary Elms was invited from the UK and I was allowed to partner. Again much learned and had fun.
The advantage of dancing is that, as soon as the ladies know you can dance well they come and get you, young and old, never a dull moment and your circle of friends at each festival soon expands.
In 2017 at the festival in Pontchartrain in France near Paris, I asked a lady if she wanted to dance. She told me I could lead well on the dance floor. “Nice of you to say this ehh, … “Kay, Kay Anderson”. Nice of you to say that Kay because I have sat and watched your dance instruction videos many times on the Internet more like a decade ago. And then getting a compliment from one of my role models is always nice.
NEDERLANDS: Dans workshops
Op bijna elk Cajun en Zydeco festival maakt de dans workshop een vast onderdeel uit van de feestvreugde en dat is niet voor niets zo want zonder lekker eten, vrienden ontmoeten en, … dansen is geen C&Z feest compleet.
De eerste die mij aan mijn arm trok om mij te onderwijzen in een cajun wals was Satu Phillips in the ‘House of Blues’ op het Zydeco City festival in Raamsdonksveer. Niet geheel vast ter been van een paar pilsjes had ze mijn interesse gewekt. Ik moest het ook maar eens gaan leren.
De volgende editie van het festival werd de dansworkshop verzorgd door Gary Hayman, je hoort hem wekelijks bij zydecajun radio. Een deel van de avond stonden we al op de vloer met die paar pasjes die ik geleerd had, zo aanstekelijk is de muziek immers.
Na Gary kwamen er nog een hele serie dans teachers voorbij zoals Harold Guillory uit Lake Charles Louisiana, Phill Underwood uit de UK. Bij zijn lessen danste ik steeds met Satu waardoor je wat sneller vooruitgang kan boeken als je met een ervaren danspartner op de vloer staat.
Op een van de edities van het ZydeoZity festival hadden we op de avond voorafgaande van de start van het festival een besloten feest van de plaatselijk gezondheidszorg instelling en Phil Underwoord werd een dagje eerder ingevlogen voor de dansworkshop. Een opmerking op het podium van mij, of er nog dames deel wilden nemen (+ 500 stuks) aan de danslessen en dat ik ook beschikbaar was, werd enthousiast met gejuich begroet. Er zijn slechtere avonden.
Dansen leren is vooral afkijken hoe de anderen het doen zoals oudgediende ‘Jerry’ uit Breaux Bridge Louisiana, hij was op bijna elk festival in Europa. Op een prive C&Z evenement was Jerry ook uitgenodigd maar hij was verhinderd en vroeg of hij een kennis mocht sturen die net in Nederland was om les te geven aan de Universiteit. Ja dat mocht en de dame in kwestie ‘Elisabeth’ uit Louisiana, ze was gewend om elk weekend naar een dans event te gaan vroeg of er een danspartner beschikbaar was. Ik vond ergens achteraf in de zaal om dat moment toe kennissen deze schoonheid aan mij voor kamen stellen met het verzoek haar te entertainen op de dansvloer. Dat zijn dan weer de voordelen (dacht ik) als je dansen hebt geleerd. Gedurende de avond vroeg ik haar terloops; “Met die warme temperaturen in Louisiana dansen jullie zeker niet zo close”, waarop zij mij dichter tegen haar aan trok. “Wat is er mis met je dansritme” zei ze. “Ik denk dat ik ergens kortsluiting heb”, antwoord ik haar eerlijk.
Buiten het festival om werd er in de winter een dansworkshop georganiseerd in de Swamp studio en Mary Elms werd uitgenodigd uit de UK en ik mocht als partner aantreden. Weer veel geleerd en plezier beleefd.
Het voordeel van dansen is dat, zo gauw de dames weten dat je goed kan dansen komen ze je halen, jong en oud, nooit een saai moment en je vriendenkring op elk festival breid zich al snel uit.
In 2017 op het festival in Pontchartrain in Frankrijk nabij Parijs, ik vroeg een dame of ze wilde dansen. Ze vertelde mij dat ik goed kon leiden op de dansvloer. “Leuk dat je dit zegt ehh, … “Kay, Kay Anderson”. Leuk dat je dat zegt Kay want ik heb vele malen naar je dansinstructie video’s zitten kijken op internet meer als tien jaar geleden. En dan een compliment krijgen van een van mijn voorbeelden is altijd leuk.
