Visages familiers des scènes françaises et d’ailleurs depuis des années, Vincent (Père) et Samuel (Garçon) Giarrusso, tous deux actifs dans la musique principalement cajun, ont réalisé cet album de famille. Pas seulement quelques chansons, mais pas moins de 18 titres ont vu le jour.
La découverte de ce nouvel album a été un peu particulière. Lors de la récente Fête de l’accordéon à Luzy, j’ai croisé Vincent et l’ai regardé pour la première fois. Même si nous nous étions déjà rencontrés à plusieurs reprises, ma connaissance limitée de la langue française en était la raison, mais une petite conversation est désormais possible, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de musique. Lors du récent festival Nuits Cajun de Saint Sernin Du Bois, j’ai parlé à Samuel, ce qui a été beaucoup plus facile puisqu’il parle parfaitement anglais.
Le dimanche soir, lorsque nous avons quitté le festival, un de mes amis musiciens, Ad van Emmerik, m’a montré un album qu’il avait acheté ce jour-là. J’ai dit : “Putain de merde”, je leur ai parlé à tous les deux et ils savaient que je faisais une émission de cajun et de zydeco sur la radio française. Ils sont si modestes maintenant ou ils ont juste oublié de m’en parler ?

L’album s’ouvre sur “allons au zydeco”. Je connais Samuel depuis de nombreuses années, depuis l’époque où il jouait avec Les 4 Jeun’s. On dit qu’il a passé beaucoup de temps en Louisiane et que jouer et assister aux week-ends de musique devait figurer sur la liste de ses favoris. Cela est évident dès les deux premiers morceaux choisis, “allons au zydeco” et “Je suis allé au bal”. Un morceau sans section rythmique, mais ce n’est pas un problème pour les danseurs expérimentés.
La troisième piste de l’album est encore une chanson qui trouve son origine dans le zydeco avec ” Boozoo’s Breakdown “, jouée avec le son cajun typique, ce qui indique une fois de plus que le cajun et le zydeco ont des liens familiaux étroits.
La piste 4 est une valse cajun “Tante Adéle”, également pour les danseurs expérimentés plus enclins au rythme, car même un rythme de base est absent, mais ce n’est certainement pas une perte pour la musique.
Trank 5 ‘Canray danse dans le ciel Two step a Jules’, un two step avec un changement de rythme à mi-parcours.
Il y a donc 13 autres titres qui valent tous la peine d’être écoutés et qui peuvent constituer les ingrédients de base de toute soirée dansante cajun.
Avec 25 ans de fond ZydecoZity où la musique zydeco était prédominante, avec la radio ZydeCajun c’est divisé 50/50 et je cherche aussi plus de musique dans cette direction.
Je me félicite donc des contributions de Vincent et de Samuel, qui sont clairement deux musiciens de premier plan pour moi. Chapeau.

For years familiar faces on the French stages and beyond, Vincent (Père) and Samuel (Garçon) Giarrusso, both active with mainly Cajun music produced this family album. Not just a few songs, but no less than 18 tracks saw the light of day.
The discovery of this new album was a bit unusual. During the recent Fête de l’accordéon in Luzy, I ran into Vincent and talked with him for the first time. Even though we had met many times before, my limited knowledge of the French language was the reason for that, but starting a small conversation is now a possibility, especially when it comes to music. During the recent Nuits Cajun festival in Saint Sernin Du Bois I spoke to Samuel, a lot easier because he speaks perfect English.
On the Sunday evening as we were leaving the festival one of my music friends Ad van Emmerik showed me an album he had bought that day. “Get this,” I said, I spoke to them both and they knew I do a cajun and zydeco program on the French radio. Are they so modest now or the both of them just forgot to inform me about that?
Well, let’s give them a pleasant surprise by writing a little about it here on the site and making it the spotlight artist next week.
The album opens with “allons au zydeco” (Let’s go to the zydeco). I have known Samuel for many years from the time he played with Les 4 Jeun’s. It is said that he spent a lot of time in Louisiana and that playing and attending the music weekends must have been on his list of favorites. This is evident in the first two chosen tracks ‘allons au zydeco’ and ‘Went to the dance’ (Je suis allé au bal). A track without a rhythm section, but that is no problem at all for the experienced dancers.
Track three of the album is again a song that finds its origin in the zydeco with ‘Boozoo’s Breakdown’ played with the typical cajun sound which indicates once again that the cajun and zydeco have close family ties.
Track 4 is a Cajun waltz ‘Aunt Adéle’ also for the more rhythmically inclined experienced dancers as even a basic rhythm is missing, but that is certainly not a loss for the music.

And so there are 13 other tracks that are all worth listening to and can of course form the basic ingredients for any Cajun dance party.
With 25 years of ZydecoZity background where the zydeco music was the predominant one, with ZydeCajun radio this is divided 50/50 and I also look for more music in that direction.
I am therefore pleased with the contributions of Vincent and Samuel, clearly for me two top musicians. Chapeau.

De ontdekking van dit nieuwe album verliep een beetje ongebruikelijk. Tijdens het recente Fête de l’accordéon in Luzy kwam ik Vincent tegen en strak hem voor het eerst aan. Ook al hadden we elkaar al vele malen ontmoet, mijn beperkte kennis van de Franse taal was daar de oorzaak van, maar een klein gesprekje aanknopen behoord nu tot de mogelijkheid, vooral op muziek gebied. Tijdens het recente Nuits Cajun festival in Saint Sernin Du Bois sprak ik Samuel, een stuk gemakkelijker want hij spreekt perfect Engels.
Op de zondagavond toen we het festival verlieten toonde een van mijn muziek vrienden Ad van Emmerik een album dat hij gekocht had die dag. “Krijg nou wat”, zei ik, ik heb ze beiden gesproken en ze wisten dat ik een cajun en zydeco programma doe op de Franse radio. Zijn ze nu zo bescheiden of het beiden gewoon vergeten om mij daarover te informeren?
Nou, laten we ze dan ook aangenaam verrassen door er wat over te schrijven hier op de site en er komende week de spotlight artiest van te maken.

Dat blijkt wel uit de gekozen eerste twee gekozen tracks ‘allons au zydeco’ en ‘Went to the dance’ (Je suis allé au bal). Een track zonder ritme sectie, maar dat is geen enkel probleem voor de ervaren dansers.
Track drie van het album is opnieuw een leedje dat zijn oorsprong vind in de zydeco met ‘Boozoo’s Breakdown’ gepeeld met de typische cajun sound wat eens te meer aangeeft dat de cajun en zydeco innige familiebanden hebben.
Track 4 is een cajun wals ’Tante Adéle’ eveneens voor de wat meer ritmisch ingestelde ervaren dansers omdat zelfs een basis ritme ontbreek, maar dat is voor de muziek zeker geen gemis.
Trank 5 ‘Canray danse dans le ciel Two step a Jules’ een Two step met halverwege een ritme verandering.
En zo zijn er nog 13 andere tracks die allen het beluisteren waard zijn en natuurlijk de basis ingrediënten kunnen vormen voor elk cajun dans feest.
Met 25 jaar ZydecoZity achtergrond waar de zydeco muziek de overhand had is dit bij ZydeCajun radio 50/50 verdeeld en zoek ik ook meer muziek op in die richting.
Ik ben dan ook blij met de bijdragen van Vincent en Samuel, duidelijk voor mij twee top muzikanten. Chapeau.
